In this episode of Naked Nuclear, host Danielle discusses the intersection of nuclear energy and indigenous ethos with guest Ryan Pickering from the Tribal Consent-Based Coalition.

The conversation, recorded on Native American Heritage Day, delves into the concept of seven-generation decision-making, as endorsed by Scott Lathrop, and how it impacts energy decisions for a cleaner future.

The discussion highlights the rich history of the yak titŷu titŷu yak tiłhini Northern Chumash tribe, their involvement in the Diablo Canyon power plant, and the broader implications of their land stewardship. The episode also tackles the history of uranium mining on Navajo land, the challenges of community consent for nuclear waste siting, and the future role of nuclear energy in America.

Along the way, Ryan shares his personal journey into the field, emphasizing the importance of mutual respect, mentorship, and energy realism in transforming the nuclear industry.00:00 Seven Generations Forward: How Indigenous Voices are Paving the Path to New Nuclear07:35 North American Tribes & Uranium Mining 10:35 Consent-Based Siting w/DOE17:37 TCBC Audience

Um, like first day of it today, so, and, and we're actually spotlighting the Tribal Consent Based Coalition, TCBC, and we have Ryan Pickering here today with us to kind of just talk through some of like the cool highlights about what is going on, some of the news around it, and what we can look forward to, um, in, in the future, uh, and so, Without further ado, Ryan, but what's what I wanted to bring up is you kind of came from the solar space before you hopped on to the nuclear side.

So can you like, what was that bridge? Like, kind of what? How did how did that come about?

[00:00:42] Ryan Pickering: Yeah, thanks, Danielle. My name is Ryan Pickering, and I'm surprised to be here with you today. You know, my career has spanned a lot of aspects of energy, and I'm so grateful to be working for a tribal consent based coalition today. Yeah, I've always been fascinated by energy. Danielle. I just, my dad is an engineer and we did a lot of experiments with little steam turbines creating electricity for science fair.
